Vakıf Katılım was awarded the “Low Carbon Hero Award” at the 11th Istanbul Carbon Summit, hosted by Istanbul Technical University, for its 8.5 MWp capacity Solar Power Plant Project implemented in Nizip, Gaziantep, with its application titled “The Power of Our Energy Dedicated to the Future: In Values and in Solar Energy”.
Vakıf Katılım received the “Low Carbon Hero Award” for its 8.5 MWp capacity Solar Power Plant Project implemented in Nizip district of Gaziantep. The award ceremony, held at the 11th Istanbul Carbon Summit, organized by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D) and hosted by Istanbul Technical University on May 4-5, 2026, recognized projects that make a difference in the fight against climate change.
The goal is to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 7,380 tons per year.
In line with Vakıf Katılım’s goal of meeting its annual electricity consumption entirely from renewable energy sources, the Solar Power Plant (SPP) project, commissioned in November 2025 in Nizip district of Gaziantep and carried out under the name “The Power of Our Energy Dedicated to the Future: In Values and in the Sun,” is established on an area of 93,000 square meters. With an installed capacity of 8.5 MWp, the plant is expected to generate approximately 15 million kWh of electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by 7,380 tons.
“Our project will offset greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to approximately 18,000 trees per year.”
Commenting on the award, Vakıf Katılım General Manager Mehmet Ali Akben said : “At Vakıf Katılım, we see renewable energy investments as an integral part of our responsibility to future generations. With this vision, in our Gaziantep Nizip Solar Power Plant project, which we commissioned last year, we used a total of 14,612 solar panels, each with a power of 585 Wp. Currently, we meet the annual energy needs of our General Directorate building and all our branches from this power plant. Thanks to our project, we also make a significant contribution to environmental sustainability by offsetting greenhouse gases equivalent to approximately eighteen thousand trees annually, and in line with our understanding of ‘Shared Past, Shared Future,’ we are working to leave a more livable world for the future with the strength we derive from our values. This award is thanks to the dedicated efforts of all our colleagues who embrace our sustainability vision and transform this vision into projects that have a real-world impact. We will continue to develop projects that generate environmental and social benefits in the coming period.”
